There was news published on July 1st, 2024, stating a new designated area migration agreement for Western Australia. The Western Australia DAMA, combined with Western Australia’s existing state-nominated migration program, will enable up to 10,000 overseas workers to settle in Western Australia annually and help address the critical workforce shortage in the state. So, if you are overseas and thinking of migrating to Australia, please target Western Australia because they’ve been given the green light to bring in 10,000 skilled workers.

When we go on the Western Australian website, there was an article stating that the skilled worker boost will ease the labor shortage. The new deal will help expand the state’s former allocation under the skilled state-nominated migration program, bringing it to 5,000 migration places.

Understanding the State Nominated Migration Program (SNMP)

So, what is the state-nominated migration program? If you are a skilled worker in your home country with certain skills listed on the skills occupation list, then you can migrate to Western Australia to work. If you go through the state-nominated migration program, you are targeting two visas:

Visa Subclass 190

If you are granted this visa, you’ll be able to work anywhere in Western Australia. To be eligible, your skills need to be on the skills occupation list, have a positive skills assessment, be under the age of 45, and have over 65 points.

Visa Subclass 491

This visa targets a regional area. To be eligible, your skills need to be on the skills occupation list, have a positive skills assessment, be under the age of 45, and have over 65 points.

Steps to Apply for the SNMP

1. Check if your skills or occupation is listed on the Western Australian occupation list. You can find this list on the migration.WesternAustralia.gov.au website.

2. Ensure you are under the age of 45.

3. Ensure you have at least 65 points. You can check this using the points calculator available on their website.

4. Get your skills assessment done by the relevant assessing authority.

5. Express your interest through the skill select program, targeting Visa Subclass 190 or 491.

Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA)

The DAMA is an agreement between the state and the Australian government, giving concessions to employers struggling to find workers. If you are looking to migrate to Western Australia but are struggling to meet some requirements, the DAMA might be for you.

Visa Subclass 482, 494, 186

Under the DAMA, you can work in Western Australia with more lenient requirements. Employers need to be endorsed by the designated area representative.

Regions Covered by DAMA

Western Australia has four DAMAs: Goldfields, Kimberley, Pilbara, and Southwest Western Australia. Employers in these regions can sponsor skilled workers.

Process for DAMA

1. Ensure your occupation is listed on the DAMA occupation list.

2. Check for any concessions on requirements like English language proficiency.

3. Get your skills assessment done, if required.

4. Express your interest through the skill select program.

Finding an Employer

If you have all the requirements and are looking for an employer, you can:

1. Register your interest with the Western Australian government.

2. Search for employers who already have a labor agreement.

3. Use job search platforms like LinkedIn and Seek to find employers willing to sponsor you.
